God uses the few

"God uses those who are weak in nature and few in number to make his name famous." (a quote I heard in a sermon and really stuck with me) Sunday July 15, 2012 I was asked to preach to Victory church in Kabuga, Kigali, Rwanda. I prayed about what I was going to tell this African church since I have never even preached in any church before.  The Lord put in on my heart to tell the church to be bold in preaching the gospel to those around them and let them know they didn't have to travel the world like us to make a difference and to be missionaries. The Lord also put it on...

Ultimate Wedding

So Saturday our team was invited to an African wedding. Which later we found out it was more so an engagement party. We were given beautiful traditional attire to wear and we all matched! (we also wore it to church the next morning :D)  During this engagement or proposal party so much craziness was going on and we seemed to be the joke of the party. For the first hour or two either the father or uncle of the soon to be married couple talked and nagosiated how much the dowry was going to be for the wanted bride. They joked about us and beer and cows. They joked about how many cows were...

My Camp Sermon and Week 1

Fellow Americans (awesome supporters),  I wish I could share more with you about the experiences I have had this week but I will try to put them in the following words. Starting last weekend our team began training on how to aid those with vision impairments and we basically planned out a week-long camp from there. On Monday I spoke on the topic of our week which was putting our identity in Christ. I gave bits of my testimony and shared with them that difficult and less than perfect circumstances are usually what the Lord uses in order to grow and show us who He is. I was able to share...

The least of these.

So far my team's type of minsitry has been hard for me. The majority of what we do is work with kids and if you know me at all, you know I have low tolerance for kids. I think they're dirty, grimy, and sometimes downright a bother. But lately, what we're doing here and what our purpose is has really been hitting me. I have yet to see them, but I keep hearing from my teammates and others the living conditions that some of these people and children are under. For instance, a woman that helps out around our house and teaches the nursery school has a daughter named Grace. The woman...

Heavenly Treasures

From anywhere in Ocean View, we can see countless mountains and a body of water. It's unreal. Today, our family took us out to breakfast and down to the beach: talk about a great Saturday morning 🙂 We love our family and the way they have made us one of them. So our first week of ministry is over and I am so confused by my own thoughts and feelings! Yesterday, some of us were talking about how we felt like we weren't able to do much here since we're only in Ocean View for a week. But our contact, Chantel, had some wise and encouraging words to say: "You can spend a year...

God’s Canvas

The suns rays peak through a smear of clouds floating across the flamingo pink sky Slowly its beams melt through the clouds scattering their yellow tint Pinks, yellows, and oranges collide in the sky fighting for dominance A haze of baby blue creeps up over the silhouette of the Rwandan mountaintops breaking through the colored chaos Slowly it pushes the different tints upwards diluting them upon the horizon Waves of fog as thick as smoke spill over the crest of the mountains Dew dusts every leaf, twig, petal and blade of grass God is an artist Lush, emerald vegetation crowds the...
